What comes out of a Maine paycheck

Net pay = Gross − Federal income tax − ME State income tax − Social Security − Medicare − Pre-tax deductions

Maine applies three brackets from 5.8% to 7.15%. Because the top rate starts at a relatively modest $63,450 (single filers), many full-time workers pay at least part of their income at Maine's top marginal rate.

Worked example — $80,000, single, biweekly

ME-taxable income: $80,000 − $4,000 pre-tax − $15,000 standard deduction = $61,000. ME tax on $61,000 (5.8%-6.75% brackets) ≈ $3,863.

Federal tax (on $61,000 taxable) ≈ $8,334 · ME state tax ≈ $3,863 · Social Security $4,960 · Medicare $1,160.

Annual take-home ≈ $57,683 → about $2,219 per biweekly paycheck (72.1% of gross).

Maine's new millionaire surcharge, starting 2026

Beginning with the 2026 tax year, Maine adds a 2% surcharge on taxable income above $1,000,000 (single filers and heads of household), $750,000 (married filing separately), or $1,500,000 (married filing jointly). This only affects a small number of very high earners and doesn't change anything for the vast majority of Maine workers. This calculator uses 2025 figures, before the surcharge takes effect.
