The pace formula
min/km = min/mile ÷ 1.609
5 miles in 45:00 → pace = 45 ÷ 5 = 9:00 /mile (≈ 5:35 /km). At that pace, a marathon would take about 3:56.
You ran for 32:00 at a steady 8:00 /km pace. How far did you go?
Distance = Time ÷ Pace = 32 ÷ 8 = 4 km, which converts to 4 ÷ 1.609 ≈ 2.49 miles. This is the reverse of the first example: instead of dividing time by distance to get pace, you divide time by pace to get distance — useful when a GPS watch failed mid-run but you know your effort held steady.
Using pace to train and race
Knowing your pace turns vague effort into a plan: set a goal finish time, read off the pace you need, and practice holding it. The race-time projections above assume you sustain the entered pace evenly — realistic for shorter distances, optimistic for the marathon, where most runners slow in the later miles. Common pacing mistakes
- Starting a race faster than goal pace. An even or slightly negative-split race tends to beat a fast start followed by a fade, especially over the half marathon and marathon.
- Confusing a min/mile training plan with a min/km watch display (or vice versa). The two units differ by a factor of 1.609 — see the table above for common equivalents.
- Chasing a flat-course pace number on hilly terrain. Effort, not pace, should stay steady on hills — pace naturally slows uphill and quickens downhill at the same effort level.
