The sales tax formulas

Adding tax: Total = Price × (1 + rate)
Removing tax: Price = Total ÷ (1 + rate)
Worked example

A $50 item at 8% tax: 50 × 0.08 = $4 tax$54 total.

Reverse: a $54 total at 8% → 54 ÷ 1.08 = $50 pre-tax, so $4 was tax.

Worked example — finding the rate from a receipt

A California receipt shows a pre-tax price of $125.00 and a total of $134.06, but doesn't print the rate. Tax charged = 134.06 − 125.00 = $9.06.

Rate = 9.06 ÷ 125.00 = 0.07248 = 7.25% — California's statewide base rate, with no city or county add-on applied at this particular register.
