Worked example — mulch for a border path

A 40 ft × 2 ft border at 4 inches deep: 80 sq ft × 0.333 ft = 26.7 cu ft = 0.99 cubic yards ≈ 14 bags of 2 cu ft.

Depth, coverage, and buying in bulk

Aim for 2–3 inches of mulch — deep enough to block weeds and hold moisture, shallow enough not to suffocate roots. Keep it pulled back a few inches from stems and trunks to avoid rot ("volcano mulching" around trees is harmful). Bags are convenient for small beds, but the math turns quickly: one cubic yard is about 13.5 bags, and bulk delivery by the yard usually costs far less for anything sizeable. Common mulch mistakes

Forgetting mulch settles and compresses after watering and rain. Buying exactly the calculated volume can leave beds looking thin within weeks — many landscapers round up an extra 10% for settling.
Mounding mulch against tree trunks and plant stems ("volcano mulching"). This traps moisture against bark and encourages rot and pests, regardless of how much total mulch was purchased.
Not accounting for existing mulch depth. Measuring bed area and target final depth without subtracting the depth of mulch already present leads to over-ordering — measure the actual gap to be filled, not the target depth from bare soil.
